The Neighbourhood Watch scheme is a partnership intended to bring people together to make our communities safer. It involves the police, Community Safety departments of local authorities, other voluntary organisations and individuals and families who ostensibly want to make their neighbourhoods better places to live. It aims to help people protect themselves and their properties and to reduce the fear of crime by means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community spirit.

Neighbourhood Watch in Spain

Neighbourhood Watch is being established in Marbella. Many foreigners are used to the concept of Neighbourhood Watch from their home countries.

Due to a big cosmopolitan community, English is chosen as the base language of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Marbella. This will ensure that foreigners can take part in the scheme more easily, since English is an international language.

The coordinator of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Marbella is bilingual (English and Spanish) and has established useful contacts within both the Town-hall and Policia Local. The meetings will be held in English, but can also be interpreted to Spanish on requested for not excluding Spanish speakers to take part.

Since the coordinator lives at Terrazas del Rodeo, the first branch of the Neigbourhood Watch scheme will be established at Terrazas del Rodeo. The Neighbourhood Watch scheme is an independent entity, but the publishing system of Terrazas-del-Rodeo.com will be used for communication.

Unfortunately, the community of Terrazas del Rodeo seems to attract criminals and squatters, which partly is believed to depend on poor management of the community. By joining the Neighbourhood Watch scheme the neighbours can work together and make it more difficult and less attractive for squatters and criminals to get established within the neighbourhood.
