The Sierra Bermeja fire has entered its third day, burning out of control. In 72 hours, it has destroyed more than 5,000 hectares of land and already extends over a 41-kilometre perimeter. It has forced a thousand families out of their homes and has claimed the life of Carlos Martínez Haro, a 44-year-old forest firefighter.

This Sunday morning, 12 September, approximately 300 residents of Jubrique village were ordered to leave their homes - as a precautionary measure - by the emergency services as the Sierra Bermeja fire entered its fourth day, still burning out of control.

Two fires in Sierra Bermeja, the one burning since Wednesday night and the other started last night, have met to form a new front with a "strength that is rarely seen in this country", according to the deputy director of Infoca, Alejandro García.

The flames have now extended into the Genal Valley forcing four more villages, Faraján, Pujerra, Alpandeire and Júzcar, to be evacuated.

This comes after Genalguacil and Jubrique were evacuated earlier on Sunday.

Late on Monday, the residents of Jubrique, Faraján, Júzcar, Alpandeire and Pujerra were allowed to return, after being evacuated on Sunday due to the advance of the flames. Therefore, there are no longer any people displaced from their homes.

The last three roads that were still closed to traffic due to the Sierra Bermeja fire have also reopened this Tuesday after Infoca declared the fire under control at dawn.
