Pastor Artur Pawlowski Arrested again for Protesting

Pastor Artur Pawlowski arrested again (5th time in last 365 days) Police allege that he has committed the offence of mischief under $5,000 by participating at the Milk River protest, in support of the Coutts protesters who are blocking the border.

Artur Pawlowski, a native of Poland, has compared the tactics used by his local government to enforce the coronavirus restrictions to actions taken by law enforcement officials when Poland was under Communist rule.

Pastor Artur Pawlowski, who has butted heads with Canadian authorities throughout the pandemic, was arrested again just before he was set to address a group of Canadian truckers opposed to vaccine mandates.

Pawlowski of the Cave of Adallum Church and Street Church in Calgary, Alberta, was arrested at his home Tuesday as he was about to depart for a church service at a border blockade engineered by truckers protesting vaccine mandates and provincial leadership in Milk River, Alberta.

Pawlowski has gained notoriety in Canada and the United States for his outspoken opposition to coronavirus worship restrictions and has been arrested multiple times over the past year for holding a church service in violation of worship restrictions and protesting outside the home of Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping.

Alberta judge to issue bail decision next week for Artur Pawlowski

Artur Pawlowski of Calgary was arrested Monday after he gave a speech last week at the Smugglers Saloon in Coutts, where protesters have been blocking travel to the United States on and off since Jan. 29.

Although the situation is ever-changing, as the bail hearing took place Wednesday afternoon, traffic in both directions was impeded as protesters continue to demand an end to vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, as well as the lifting of other pandemic-related public health restrictions. 

Pawlowski is charged with two criminal offences including mischief over $5,000 as well as interrupting the operation of essential infrastructure in a manner that renders it inoperative. 

Since his arrest Monday, Pawlowski's supporters have raised $26,000 for his release and legal fees.

Some 7,000 officers have been mobilized for the weekend protests, creating checkpoints, deploying armored personnel carriers and setting up water cannons to brace the city for the protests. Inspired by Canadian truckers paralysing border traffic with the United States, the demonstrators are railing against coronavirus restrictions such as France's vaccination pass, but also fast-rising energy prices. A police raid on the bridge blockade at Windsor, Ontario, failed to shut it down. With protesters in Ottawa also digging in, what will it take to get them to budge?

They arrived by the bus load - police in balaclavas and carrying long guns, ready to oust dozens of protesters blocking roads leading to the Ambassador Bridge.

There were pickups and SUVs festooned with Canadian flags, anti-vaccination slogans and anti-Trudeau epithets, as well as some heavy commercial trucks.

About 100 vehicles have been parked along the roughly 2km (1.25 miles) of road leading up to the bridge for almost a week.

 More than 12 hours after a court issued an injunction ordering the Windsor site to be cleared, the police moved in on Saturday morning. A number of vehicles agreed to leave immediately, although not without a loud honk or a shout of disapproval.

More were ticketed and towed in the evening. But vehicles are no longer the problem, says Jason Bellaire, deputy chief of operations for the Windsor Police Service.

The problem is the people, he says.

Police have failed to clear a major bridge-crossing between the US and Canada. It's being blocked by truckers protesting against vaccine rules. Police persuaded some drivers to move their vehicles - but they reconvened later. The weekend has also brought a fresh wave of protesters into the Canadian capital, Ottawa, where a core group of truckers continue to occupy the downtown area. Taking their outrage to the government's doorstep.

It's been over two weeks now that the Freedom Convoy has camped in the Canadian capital Ottawa.

A plan to force unvaccinated truck drivers crossing between Canada and the US to quarantine, sparked the initial rally.

Police could not move the protesters off a border crossing. It's one of the major corridors into the United States. The blockade has affected trade and supply chains between the two countries. It's also inspired support rallies over the border to Buffalo in New York State, and as far away as New Zealand.

In the Netherlands - truckers rolled through The Hague.

Thousands of French police were deployed to stop Convoy of Freedom from entering Paris, but some protesters made it.

They took aim at Vaccine Passes and President Emmanuel Marcon, but also tapped into the discontent over rising prices.

Police cleared the streets using tear gas. But this has not ended the protests. Next stop, the European Union's power-base in Brussels.

About 750km (466 miles) east of the Ambassador Bridge, the protest group that has taken over the nation's capital was showing no signs of slowing down on Sunday.But then came news of a breakthrough - a deal struck between the city of Ottawa and protest leaders. As first reported by CBC News, it could mean the convoy of trucks relocating away from residential areas.

Unlike the Windsor crowd, which was limited to one major road, the Ottawa protest has essentially taken over the centre of a major city, with thousands of people flooding the streets with Canadian flags.

Barbecues are set up on the street with food being handed out to hungry demonstrators, while people play street hockey to the sounds of dance music, honking horns and chants of "freedom".

"This is not an anti-vax movement; this is a freedom movement. It's for choice," said Justin Smith, who was enjoying Beavertails - a Canadian pastry - with his wife Brandy Lawrence on the sidelines of the protests on Saturday evening. Both were wearing Canadian flags as capes.

"This nation is through and through my heart, I love Canada like you wouldn't believe," said Mr Smith.They say they hate what mandates have done to their family, including their five children aged six to 16.

"I want my kids to go into a store and see a smile on someone's face. That's the saddest thing," said Ms Lawrence.This wasn't the couple's first time in the Ottawa "red zone" - they came to support the convoy in its first weekend, and drove the five hours from their home in southern Ontario to be there a second time.

"I will do anything and everything I can do to support these people," says Mr Smith.
