To Consider:

It's not so much staying alive, it's staying human that's important. What counts is that we don't betray each other

Trucks stuck at Poland-Belarus border as EU sanctions deadline passes

A huge queue of trucks has formed on the Poland-Belarus border as Russian and Belarussian drivers try to leave the EU following a sanctions deadline.

In the run-up to the Saturday deadline, the line extended to 80km (60 miles), with some stuck for up to 33 hours.

The EU has banned lorries from Russia and Belarus - except those carrying medicine, mail or petroleum products - from entering or staying in the bloc.

Germany sets Russian oil ban deadline

Germany will stop importing oil from Russia by the end of this year, said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

“I therefore say here clearly and unequivocally, yes, Germany is also completely phasing out Russian energy imports,” Baerbock said after a meeting with her Baltic counterparts.

“We will halve oil by the summer and will be at zero by the end of the year, and then gas will follow, in a joint European roadmap, because our joint exit, the complete exit of the European Union, is our common strength,” she said.

Europe’s biggest economy has recently intensified efforts to reduce its exposure to Russian energy imports. Statistics show Russian oil accounted for 25% of German imports as of the beginning of April, down from 35% before the start of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine. A stoppage of gas imports is tougher for Germany, which in the first quarter received 40% of deliveries from Russia.

JPMorgan issues crude warning to EU

The price of oil could soar if the European Union abruptly bans Russian crude from its energy markets, JPMorgan said on Tuesday in a note seen by Business Insider. According to the investment bank, a full and immediate embargo would displace four million barrels of Russian oil per day, sending the benchmark Brent crude to $185 a barrel.

Such a ban would leave “neither room nor time to re-route [supplies] to China, India, or other potential substitute buyers,” JPMorgan said.

“In a slower phase-out, Russia would have more time to adjust its oil flows toward friendlier buyers and global ex-OPEC+ supply growth would have time to grow sufficiently to fill at least some of the Russia-sized hole in global oil supply,” it added.

It look like EU's ban on Russian crude oil will not have much of an impact, since Eu will buy more of the crude from other suppliers that would have been delivered to China and India, meanwhile China and India are buying more crude from Russia.

Russia sends peace proposal to Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, has told journalists that Moscow has forwarded to Ukraine a “draft document” with concrete wording.

“The ball is in their court, we are awaiting their response,” Peskov said on Wednesday. When asked if there was a deadline for Ukraine to respond, the official indicated that it was up to Kiev. He noted, however, that the “Ukrainians are not showing much inclination toward intensifying the negotiating process.”

On top of that, he accused Ukraine of “constantly moving away from their words, constantly changing them.” The Kremlin spokesperson concluded that this supposed lack of consistency “is having very bad consequences in terms of the negotiations’ effectiveness.”

Peskov’s remarks echo those made earlier on Wednesday by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, who said that Moscow had lost trust in the Ukrainian negotiators. Speaking to the Rossiya 24 news channel, she used a Russian proverb ‘trust, but verify’ shortening it to just ‘verify,’ “because we haven’t had any trust in these people for a long time.”

Zakharova went on to suggest that the Ukrainian government was not acting independently but was rather controlled from outside. She described the “Kiev regime’s” handling of the talks as a “circus,” saying that the Ukrainian authorities kept changing their position. Moreover, Zakharova suggested that Kiev’s participation in the negotiations could be nothing more than a diversionary tactic. She added, however, that Moscow was “ready for that,” having seen where the Minsk agreement ended up.
