Common adverse reactions to mRNA vaccines are fever and nausea, which could kill frail and elderly people. It is advisable to carry out individual evaluation for each frail or terminally ill patient to see if the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risk of eventual side effects.
Norwegian health officials are warning about the possible risks of COVID-19 vaccines for frail, elderly people following reports of deaths shortly after receiving their coronavirus vaccination. It cannot be rule out that adverse reactions to the vaccine occurring within the first days following vaccination (such as fever and nausea) may contribute to more serious course and fatal outcome in patients with severe underlying disease.
The Norwegian health authorities advice that an evaluation should be carried out for each individual patient to see whether the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of eventual side effects.
The large studies on Comirnaty (BioNTec/Pfizer) did not include patients with unstable or acute illness and included few participants over 85 years of age.
