Wearing face mask outdoors in Spain will no longer be mandatory from 26 June, as long as a minimum distance of at least 1.5 meters can be maintained, between people, except for groups of cohabitants.

The Regional coalition government of Andalucía, between Partido Popular (PP) and Ciudanos (Cs), has expressed disagreement with the central government's decision and has expressed that they would like people to continue to wear face masks.

It was on 18 June 2021 when Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this will be the last weekend that we will have to wear face masks in the open air.

Este será el último fin de semana con mascarillas en los espacios al aire libre

The obligation to wear face masks in all public spaces (indoors and outdoors) was made compulsory in the entire Spain by the government's decree of 29 Mars 2021. To begin with the government made it compulsory to wear face masks even on the beach, but became altered after criticism.

The government has on 24 June 2021 decided to alter their decree of 29 Mars 2021, in such a way that the use of masks in outdoor spaces will no longer be mandatory from 26 June, as long as a minimum distance of at least 1.5 meters can be maintained between people, except for groups of cohabitants.

The use of a face mask will continue to be mandatory in any closed space, for public use or that is open to the public, as well as in any outdoor space where the distance of 1.5 meters between people cannot be kept, except for groups of cohabitants. The face mask will also be mandatory at large outdoor events, when attendees are standing or if, while seated, it is not possible to maintain 1.5 meters of distance between people, except for groups of cohabitants.

Junta de Andalucía

The regional government of Andalucía decided on 14 July 2020 to extend the obligation to wear face masks outdoors within Andalucía from 15 July 2020; where it became compulsory to wear face masks outdoors even when one was on one's own, regardless if there were any people nearby or not. This decision was never revoked, but became overridden by the decision of the central government of 29 March 2021, where it became compulsory to wear face masks outdoors in the entire Spain.

The president of the Junta de Andalusian, Juanma Moreno (PP), has expressed irritation with Pedro Sanchez announcement, due to lack of dialogue and co-governance between the Prime Minister and the autonomous regions.

According to Juanma Moreno, We have still months ahead of us where masks will have to be mandatory and have to be worn in some economic activities.

Quedan meses donde la mascarilla, en algunas actividades económicas, va a tener que ser obligatoria

The Government of Andalusia is studying where the use of masks will still be mandatory, such as those that are enclosed or public transport.

The Regional Minister of Health (Consejero de Salud y Familias), Jesús Aguirre Muñoz (PP), insist that people should continue to wear face masks.

Esperamos que el fin del uso de las mascarillas anunciado por el Gobierno esté avalado por criterios científicos, transparentes y claros. Desde aquí seguiremos instando a los andaluces a usarla, es lo que más puede aislarnos de los contagios.
